MEET THE SOLOISTS:

Sirena Huang
is an accomplished violinist and an eighth grader at Renbrook School.
Favorite thing about playing in an orchestra or playing music in general: I enjoy playing in an ensemble because it's a neat experience to be able to ‘share' a piece with other musicians; it's like having a conversation.
Have you performed in any unique situations? ...Last summer, I had the incredible opportunity to play for the king and queen of Jordan at the World Peace Conference in Petra. Many Nobel Prize laureates were there, and I even got to meet the Dalai Lama!

Jennie Brent is a ninth grader at the Foote School and studies cello with Ole Akahoshi.
Do you have any pre-concert rituals you follow? Eat bananas. Usually I don't get nervous for concerts until right before, and I get really panicky and shaky. Luckily, most of that goes away when I get on stage.
How do you motivate yourself to practice when you're not in the mood? I find that when I am really stressed out with homework and tests, practicing is a really good way for me to just clear my head and calm myself down. It is really hard for me to make myself practice when I'm tired or feeling bad about my music and sometimes it seems impossible. On these days, I have to set goals for myself so that I know I am practicing to get something done and not just to take up time in my day.
